It IS about sharing it with others, for free, and they share their place with you too!
It is the offspring started by the couchsurfing movement, updated by borrowing SOME of the methods of ensuring proper conduct from AirBnB, VRBO, etc.
Not JUST crashing on a couch at your buddy’s place.
Staying at wonderful, unique places, often WITH the owners, who might guide you locally, cook for you, stay up late and share some schnapps?
NOT just down the street, how about venturing around the workld, dropping in on new friends, and they would come and see you too?
For the first 1000 members (right now) its all free.

A quick glance showed me: Slovenia, Chile, Peru, Spain, Calgary, Chicago and even the founder (one of them, anyways, in Hayward Wisconsin)

Publishing it makes you a Founding member, free forever.

“Instead of a $300-a-night Airbnb, stay with locals for free. They’ll share their food, their favorite hidden spots, and take you on all the little adventures they’ve planned. The only ‘cost’? Making a new friend, and paying it forward when it’s your turn to host. People love to travel, yes. But they also love to host. So why not do both?”
Three Steps To Living Like A Local

Browse adoptions.
Find an adoption that actually fits you. A host often offers a few, like a summer week on the water or a cozy winter weekend, and every adoption lays out the itinerary, the space, the house rules, and who you’d be living with, so nothing’s a surprise when you land.
step two
Connect and confirm.
Send a short, honest note: who you are, why this adoption, and why their profile clicked. If they say yes, you chat, trade pics, and hop on a quick video call. Once you both confirm, it’s real. Go pack a bag.

Then live it up together.
This is the whole point. Your new friend has a plan, and you get the real version of their city, not the tourist one. The trip you never could’ve booked.
