Great Southern Touring Route
845 kilometres (523 miles)
3–7 days
The Great Southern Touring Route travels southwest from Melbourne to Geelong, past the vineyards of the Bellarine Peninsula to the Great Ocean Road. This stretch of coastline is famous for the imposing beauty of the Twelve Apostles, whale watching near Warrnambool and historic shipwrecks which warn of the dangerous Southern Ocean. Turning inland, visitors can explore the walking trails, waterfalls, and wildflowers of the Grampians National Park, and learn about western Victoria’s rich Aboriginal history and culture.
Returning to Melbourne via Ballarat, travellers can experience the gold rush history of the 1800s in Sovereign Hill. For those with more time, add Daylesford to the journey, just two hours from the Grampians and 30 minutes from Ballarat, staying in luxury hotels and enjoying the finest regional produce at award-winning restaurants.
