Driving from Melbourne to Sydney means travelling at your own pace and choosing your own highlights. Wandering through national parks, discovering native wildlife, and cooling off at white-sand beaches. And all the way, each passing town tempts the tastebuds with the freshest local seafood matched with local wines.

The coast itinerary takes in the popular towns of Inverloch, Metung and Mallacoota. But first: the southernmost tip of mainland Australia, Wilsons Promontory National Park, offers a spectacular landscape of huge granite mountains, rainforest, remote beaches and coastlines.

It’s a good idea to venture inland on the first two legs of the journey, and explore the green hills of West Gippsland with its fertile farms and historic villages. Visitors can also discover Victoria’s gold rush past in the tiny historic village of Walhalla, now home to less than 35 people.

Highlights:

Little Penguins coming ashore each night at Phillip Island
Wilsons Promontory National Park — white-sand beaches, rock formations and unique bushland
Metung – a charming fishing village.
Croajingolong National Park — known for its birdlife and giant sand dunes
Eden Killer Whale Museum
Koala spotting at Raymond Island
