New Zealand Things To Do
Bay Of Islands
Waiheke Island is worth visiting from Auckland – Great wine tastings
If anyone is into good hikes, Tongariro Alpine Crossing is technically one of the “Great Walks” but the only one that can be done during 1 day with no hut reservations. You do need to book a hotel that transports you! In the middle of nowhere, but an incredible hike.
Stay overnight on a boat in Milford sound! An incredible experience
South Island: Franz Josef and Fox Glacier
And if you get a chance on North Island, make all the way to the top of New Zealand, called Cape Reinga. It’s a long day trip from the Bay of Islands but you’ll see the Tasman Sea crash into the Pacific. It’s a beautiful place.
Hobbiton is fun! Even though I’m not the biggest fan. It’s touristy, but very cool to see.
Sky diving in Taupo
Also oldest pub/hotel in NZ is in the Bay of Islands, fun to visit if you’re up there!
Rotorua – Te Whakarewarewa
The Agrodome is pretty cool for families as there is a really cool sheep show, they shear the sheep. And it’s a farm too.
Lake Taupo is a great base on north island for adventure activities – white water rafting, zip lining, black water cave tubing, jet boats, etc
Cape Kidnappers golf course is on every golf tour.
Abel Tasman National Park has some great walking tracks.
Close second – Doubtful Sound nearby.
Routbourne Trek for the serious hikers
Doubtful SOund is also supposed to be amazing … a bit harder to get to so not as popular as Milford.
Queenstown Ice Arena… Open pretty much all year, so a great spot if the weather is bad and you’re stuck with the kids
Arrowtown from Q-town is a short drive and nice place to get lunch.
A “million dollar cruise” in Queenstown if you don’t want something so adventurous. Locally owned.
Paragliding in Queenstown
Helicopter tour to Milford Sound is great but if the weather is bad they miss it entirely. Bus there and helicopter back?
The Antarctic center in Christchurch is super fun for the kids. Or adults.
The All Blacks experience in Auckland was a fun, short thing to do.
Pack some moleskin for blisters.
3 hours flight from Sydney or Melbourne. I think Fiji is 3 hrs from Auckland too. (Stopover to break up the trip)

New Zealand’s Ten Great Walks
Great Walk bookings are open for the 2023/24 season.
New Zealand’s Great Walks are premier tracks that pass through diverse and spectacular scenery. From native forests, lakes and rivers to rugged mountain peaks, deep gorges and vast valleys, there’s a Great Walk for everyone!
Great Walks tracks are well formed and easy to follow. While most people prefer to explore on their own, guided trips offer a bit more comfort. Great Walks are accessible from major towns that are well serviced by local operators and accommodation and transport providers.
